DESIGN SQUAD, the Emmy Award-winning PBS KIDS website, is going GLOBAL! It’s launching during National Engineers Week, February 24th, on Global Day, when thousands of engineers and educators are pledging their time to lead kids in hands-on engineering activities.

DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL connects kids to their peers from around the world, empowering them to solve global engineering challenges and expanding their cross-cultural understanding. In Fall 2016, DESIGN SQUAD GLOBAL will launch DSG Clubs, connecting eight-to 13-year-olds in out-of-school programs around the world. Led by an engineer or educator, the Clubs aim to build kids’ global competency as they work together on engineering projects that meet needs in their communities. A DSG Club Guide will provide Club Leaders with professional development videos and support as they guide kids through engineering activities
Michelle Reason, a 5th grade teacher and DSG club leader at P.S. Vernum Middle School in Averne, New York, partnered with a DSG club in Soweto, South Africa. The experience, she said, was amazing. “We shared interests, answered cultural questions, and taught each other greetings in other languages. The kids on both ends were ecstatic. My kids were very surprised that they were more similar than different. For example, they learned that kids in South Africa also wore Nikes, and liked watching Empire and Nickelodeon.”
