If you are linking over from the 10 Reasons Disney Social Media Moms “On The Road” Celebration: Chicago 2014 Rocked!, you know I recently had the pleasure of meeting “Princess Etch-A-Sketch” at a Disney Social Media Moms “On The Road” Celebration. We were all pretty much blown away by her talent and creations! So much so, that I’m certain Princess Etch-A-Sketch should actually be renamed “QUEEN Etch-A-Sketch”. Think you are good with an Etch-A-Sketch? “Queen” Princess Etch-A-Sketch can rock an Etch-A-Sketch something crazy. So much so, that DISNEY CONTACTED HER (seriously now, imagine The Walt Disney Company calling you; “Hey, your work is awesome! Would you like to collaborate with us?”)!! Really, she’s that awesome. Before you scroll down and view images of her work, keep in mind that an Etch-A-Sketch creation is done with one continuous line. You mess up, you start over. Also remember how hard it is just to make a simple shape on an Etch A Sketch (okay, maybe that’s just me, but it’s def not easy). Happen to have one lying around? Grab it and refresh your memory on how not so easy they are to manipulate. Now go ahead, scroll on and prepare to be amazed! (I’ve added a full size image at the bottom to show more detail)
So who is the amazing artist behind these creations? Jane Labowitch, originally from Michigan, has lived in Chicago for the past 5 years. She first started Etch A Sketching around the age of 4 when finding her self bored visiting her Grandma on weekends. Learn all about her world as Princess Etch-A-Sketch in our personal interview:
What is your background/ education?
Jane: “I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Illustration from the American Academy of Art that I got last May :)”
Is sketching your full time job?
Jane: “I currently do Etch A Sketch art on a freelance basis and would eventually like to move toward doing it full-time. As of right now I also have a part-time job as an assistant/photo retoucher at a photography studio.”
What can you sketch?
Jane: “I can etch anything from realism to cartoon to animals to people to landmarks–you name it!”
How do you choose what you sketch?
Jane: “I choose the things that inspire me, and often like etching things as a way of paying homage.”
How long does a sketch take?
Jane: “For a small (pocket) size Etch A Sketch, depending on the subject matter and degree of detail a piece can take from 15 minutes up to 5 hours. For a large (classic) size Etch A Sketch, a piece can take from ~3 to over 25 hours.”
Are any 2 the same?
Jane: “Even if I etch the same exact image on two Etch A Sketch units, every piece is unique in that they are created with individual attention.”
What work(s) are you most proud of?
Jane: “I am really proud of the two Disney castles I etched for the Disney Parks blog (attached), as well as a more recent etch I completed of St. Basil’s cathedral as a personal project.”
What is your favorite work (s)?
Jane: “My favorite work of mine as of recently is my etch of Ellie and Carl from Up. I like it a lot because it’s on a heart-shaped Etch A Sketch!”
What is your favorite thing about sketching?
Jane: “I really like the unique challenges that the Etch A Sketch brings as an artistic medium. No other medium requires that an entire drawing be made with one line. No other form of art can be made using knobs. And I love that first and foremost, it’s a toy! I love how my art is created on something that brings joy to children and nostalgia to adults. :)”
We hear you are collaborating with Disney? Can you tell us anything about the project?
Jane: “I can’t tell too much–but my next collaboration is going to be a series of videos featuring time-lapse Etch A Sketch drawings. The project is already underway!” Update: Video #1 is Live!!
What is it like to get a call from Disney wanting to work with you?
Jane: “It’s a dream come true! I remember when I first got an email from Gary when he expressed interest in my art and its potential for the Disney Parks blog. I remember calling everyone in my family and telling them “I’m going to do art for DISNEY!”. And it’s been an amazing experience every step of the way since I was first contacted.”
What does Ohio Art/Etch-A-Sketch think about your work?
Jane: “As of recent Ohio Art (the company that produces Etch A Sketch) has been taking more notice and they have been really supportive! They have my work featured on their website right now, and have even provided me with Etch A Sketches.”
*****
I know what you’re thinking, “Where can I get one of these???? Can this awesomeness be purchased?” The answer is “yes!” it certainly can be purchased. Both completed, custom and portrait creations can be purchased through Princess Etch-A-Sketch’s Etsy store or by connecting with her via email. Prices vary depending on size, detail, degree of difficulty and custom vs pre-made creations. Prices ranges from approximately $40 – $500+.
And not to worry about your creation ever erasing, messing up, etc. Jane has you covered, “A normal Etch A Sketch will erase if shaken, but I preserve my units so that they will never erase. I drill a hole in the back of the unit and remove the powder so that there is nothing left inside the unit to re-coat the screen when the Etch A Sketch is shaken. I have shipped Etch A Sketches all over the US and Europe and they have made their postal journeys fine 🙂 .” Additionally, she glues down the knobs for extra security.

These are incredible. My children were always better than me on Etch A Sketch.
That seems to be true with most things. My kids are amazing with electronic stuff compared to me 🙂 Her first video just went live: http://parentinginnky.com/princess-etch-a-sketch-disney-video-1/
That is amazing! I wish I could get that good at Etch a Sketch but I think I was only ever able to draw squares 😛
