A proud grandmother took to Facebook last week to excitedly share her granddaughter’s creativity. Posting in a group dedicated to reusing and recycling, the post featured a photo of a handmade cat castle with the words, “My granddaughter made this for her cats out of cardboard boxes (from Amazon)!” Commenters shared in the grandmother’s pride and praised the creativity, suggesting the castle be expanded to include high rise extensions and balconies.
However, the simple post wasn’t enough to satisfy all online admirers. Many requested more details as to how the house was constructed. The grandmother answered with a follow up post, including all the details her granddaughter provided:
“{She} worked on it every day for 2-3 hours, so roughly 40 hrs, 750 {hot glue} sticks and about 20,000 individually cut cardboard pieces, each being 1″ by 2″, {went into creating it}.
“I’ve attached photos of {the cat castle} from each of the four sides (going by the base), plus one with a young cat in it.
“The castle is two stories high, and it’s sturdy, as evidenced by a great-grandchild managing to climb over into it from the couch! 🙂
“The first step she took to create this was to cut a cardboard box into small rectangles, as though they were tiny, flat bricks. That was a LOT of cutting – she said over 20,000 pieces, I believe.
“For the first level, she layered the cardboard pieces as one would bricks, using hot glue where bricks would have cement.
“{The} following layers were done the same way – layering them in a circular way as you would bricks, with some edges overlapping, lending it the rough texture that it has (which doubles as a claw sharpener, we found out!).
“To create the windows, she paused at the level even with the BOTTOM of each window, then molded a frame, so to speak, in whatever shape she wanted the window to be. You can view in the pictures that she added several layers around the shape itself, then continued with the rest of the “walls” of the castle, as before.
“For the divider between levels, she simply cut several layers of cardboard to the correct shape and hot glued them into place, as well.
“We’ve discovered by chance that the castle can withstand the weight of a three year old toddler – because kids get into EVERYTHING! lol The cats love this castle, both for a resting place and for a scratching post!”
A suggestion was made to try bundling the boxes instead of gluing everything if she planned to make more or expand upon this one.
