What’s better than a holiday decoration that you can use more than one month out of the year? This adorable scarecrow and snowman is perfect and can be used from October through March!
This little guy is so versatile. Make it your own, change the size and best of all use what you have!

What you’ll need:
– A pallet or you can buy wood from the hardware store
– Saw
– Hammer
– Nails
– Paint/Stain
-Paint brushes (I like foam ones)
– Paint pens
-Sealer
-Sand paper
jk
1. First thing you will need to do if using a pallet is to take the pallet boards off. This can be a hard task. Be careful of the nails they use and not to break the wood slates.
jh
2. You need to cut 6 pieces this size, one for the body and two at for the hat brim. As I said you can make yours whatever size you want. I cut my pallet slate pieces to 30″ long. **you can make the brim shorter if you want. One of them I cut 25″ so it wasn’t so wide**
*
3. Once all of your pieces are cut lay out 4 pieces side by side touching each other. (you could use wood glue and glue them together but I did not).
*
4. Next take your 5th piece, which is your hat brim and place it on your scarecrow/snowman. I like to place mine on an angle like this but you can play with it and see what you like best for yours. Once the brim is where you want it, nail it in place using your nails and hammer. I like to put a nail in each slat to hold it all together. Flip it over and match your hat brim for the other side and nail down.

You are now ready to paint!
*
5. I chose to stain my scarecrows hat because we had some stain on hand and I liked the look. I stained my hat first and waited for that to dry a bit before painting his face. I used a vanilla paint for his face. Let that side dry completely.
*
6. Once dry. you can use your paint pens and draw his eyes, nose and mouth. I like to use a pencil first and then go over that with the paint pens.
*
7. After the scarecrow is dry, flip it over and paint your snowman. I used black for my snowman’s hat and pure white for his face. Repeat the steps that I used to paint the scarecrow. Let dry completely.
*
8. If you are going to use him outside you will want to put an outdoor sealer on him so it can withstand the weather.
*
9. Now that everything is dry you are ready to give your scarecrow and snowman some accents.
I use wired burlap ribbon to make a bow for my scarecrow. I added in a little rattan that I had lying around and took a sunflower and hot glued it in the center.. I just used hot glue to attach my bow to my scarecrow.
I left my snowman plain but you could add a bow to him as well or he would look cute with some jingle bells.

DIY Reversible Scarecrow To Snowman Pallet
This is really cute!! I have 2 pallets in the garage. Guess what I am making for next year?!
Right!?! It’s adorable 😉
Beautiful design thank you for showing the plans tracy Chapman
Thanks! If you make it, please share pics with us. We’d love to see ?
What did you do for a stand?
We just rested it against the house. If you are wanting it in the yard, you might be able to put a couple wooden stakes in the ground and then rest your snowman/ scarecrow against that. Have fun!
Love this and planning to make a few for family. But wondering what type of paint you used so it will last long in our snow/rainy seasons?
Use an outdoor paint. I also suggest sealing it with a waterproof sealant. Have fun!
Love it.
Hi, thank you for all the good details, my question is, what type of paint did you use ? Is it chalk or exterior paint ? Thank you.
Regular craft paint was used, but exterior paint would also work. Just be sure to seal it when finished 🙂
Looks like fun
Send us a picture if you make one. ? We’d love to see it!
You did a very nice job on both on sides of your boards. Home Depot had a class for DIH (do it herself),and they used tung and grove boards. The boards were glued (wood) togethered and used a pc of pine for the hats.
Cute ideas!!
Hi Jamie, my name is Diane and I live in Michigan. I saw your snowman and scarecrow you made from pallets and because I am not crafty I was wondering if you make and sell them? If so I’m interested in purchasing one of each, so please email me to let me know. Thank you
Hi Diane!
Please email me: Angela@4TheLoveOfFamily.com and I can help you out. 🙂
How long did you wait for the paint to dry before turning it over to do the snowman?
Thanks!
Hi! I waited a couple of hours, but I propped it up against a shelf in my garage and didn’t lay it flat on the ground. We’d love to see pics when you’re finished!!
🙂
A very genius idea, I love it very much. Thank you
THANK YOU for sharing! I’ve been wanting to make one of these!

Do you have templates for the cute faces?

Nice job! Very sumple but looks great
I agree! Jaime did a great job!
🙂
guys i have seen many scare crows but this one is so unique and awesome!
Hi. I’ve been planning on making one of these. Thank you for the instructions. I’m using single fence boards with a 1″ by 3″ for the brim. I have a ton of used fence boards I sand well before painting. I made a group of Halloween figures (black cats, mummy, witch, ghost and Frankenstein) which I made bases for out of pieces of the fence boards and 90 degree metal angles which are used for book shelves. I’m going to do the same with the scarecrow/snowman. Thanks again.
I’d love to see pics!!!
What kind of paint did you use?
So cute!!! Thanks for sharing
Please send us some pictures of your snowman/scarecrow 🙂
