While fan conventions are an absolute blast, especially magical ones, they can be quite a challenge for those in need of extra accommodations.
Cons are typically very crowded, take place over large areas, and are loud; overwhelmingly so if you have sensory sensitivity. It’s simply the nature of the events. I found myself sprawled out in a somewhat quieter corner at a recent con as my family went on to enjoy activities. This specific incident was a time when I thought I was having a better day. I was certain I could push through and didn’t take the wheelchair – that was my mistake. Unable to push further, I searched for support. Customer service was unsure if they had wheelchairs on site for use or if there was an option to rent/borrow one for a few hours (not that I expected them to). It took multiple people asking multiple other people to finally find out they did have wheelchairs but only used them to take guests to their vehicles and back. I was unable to rent or use one. Understandable. Because of this experience and the struggles my daughter and I have with hearing, I planned ahead for LeakyCon: Chicago 2023 (LeakyCon 2024: Portland). Researching accommodations in advance, I was surprised to discover not only does Leaky Con offer many support options, but go above and beyond.
In terms of accommodations and accessibility, LeakyCon stood out among any other event I’ve ever been to, not just conventions. In addition to everything below being offered, a few days before the event, I received an email from the LeakyCon Customer Service Manager touching base with my daughter and me since we’d indicated on our ticket registration we had extra needs. This individual was also on-site during the 2023 event in Chicago and available to offer support when needed.

“Sticker Type 1: This sticker gives access to a seating section reserved for attendees who need to be close to the front of the room due to a hearing, vision, or sensory processing disability, as well as individuals whose view may be obstructed due to height. This sticker also encompasses the accommodations included in Sticker Type 2.
Sticker Type 2: This sticker is for attendees who need extra time to get to their seats, are unable to wait in lines, or prefer to limit their time in crowds. Attendees with this sticker type also have access to reserved seating, but it may not be at the front of the room.”
