What emotions surface in you when you hear the word ‘healthcare’? For me and many people, healthcare is one of those necessary frustrations we must endure in life. It’s frustrating, confusing and overwhelming yet something that has to be.
I’d love to be able to say my years of handling my family’s healthcare needs has made me an expert in the area. While I do feel more confident than I did in the beginning, I am far from feeling empowered. The hardest part for me is the terminology used in healthcare. I’ve learned a bit over the years, like FSA (Flexible Spending Account) and EOB (Explanation Of Benefits), but still not enough to feel confident in my healthcare knowledge. Especially as the time to re-enroll again nears, I need to be confident. Learning and understanding healthcare will not only reduce my frustration and confusion, but help me find the right plan for my family.
So where do we start? The first step to taking control of your healthcare is becoming educated and informed. I was recently introduced to UnitedHealthcare’s (UHC) mission to do just that and empower people when it comes to their healthcare. UHC understands that educating people about their health insurance is key. They’ve created a website that offers fun and engaging ways to learn about healthcare. Below are two of the games you’ll find on their page. After playing them, I 1. was surprised by what I didn’t know and 2. had learned quite a bit. Try them out for yourself and enter to win some pretty exciting prizes!
What’s The Word?
Remember that ‘must-know’ yet super confusing healthcare terminology I mentioned? Test your knowledge of it on UHC’s What’s The Word? crossword puzzle and see how you do. Hints are provided if needed (I needed!). When you are finished, be sure to enter your information for a chance to win one of the $100 weekly prizes or $500 monthly prizes!
Are You A Health Plan Pro?
If it wasn’t clear enough from my confession above, UHC’s 4 part (see below) Are You A Health Plan Pro? game showed me I am not a healthcare pro. However, I learned quite a bit playing and entered my information at the end for a chance to win a $100 weekly prize or a $500 monthly prize. Fingers crossed!
The 4 parts to Are You A Health Plan Pro?
1. Terminology is the focus of UHC’s Are You A Health Plan Pro? quiz part one. It’s goal is to help you learn more about terms and generic health care information.
2. Do you get regular check ups or find yourself having to go to the doctor often? Play the match game in part 2 that teaches you all about health plan accounts like the HSA. FSA, and HRA that can help you afford those visits.
3. Everyone’s health care situation is different, and it’s important to know the ratio between out-of-pocket costs and premiums. Use UHC’s slider tool in part 3 to decipher the difference.
4. Lastly, You may be wasting money by going to the ER when you could just be going to Urgent Care or using Virtual Visits through your health plan. Figure out which services are most or least expensive by ranking them yourself!
Comment below with your thoughts on the engagements above. We’d love to know if you learned anything new about healthcare? What would help you feel empowered when it comes to healthcare?

It’s sometimes hard to find a doctor you’re comfortable with, whether it’s for you or your child. Making a list of what’s important to you — whether you have a physician you like now, are uncomfortable in your current treating situation, or are in the process of looking for a new provider — can really help.
