If you’ve been following the hashtag #LoveOfFamilyTravels, you know this past June our family made the short drive from Cincinnati, OH to Lake Erie Shores & Islands. The Lake Erie Shores and Islands area is filled with family friendly things to do. Unfortunately, this trip was a short one. We were only able to fit in a visit to Cedar Point, African Wildlife Safari Park, and Put-In-Bay. Our Put-In-Bay stop specifically, was super short. There is so much to do on the small island we couldn’t even come close to exploring it all in one afternoon. We did however, take Miller Ferries over for an afternoon and fit in what we could.
Put-In-Bay, just one of the Lake Erie Islands, is a charming town full of history and activity. We spent the first part of our visit walking around the island and taking in the sites. We found that the views are amazing, they care for all guests (there were many 4 legged friends around), they have one of our favs- a Del Sol, and the coolest sandbox ever! We quickly discovered the #LakeErieLove!!
Our very favorite part of the island however, was Will’s playground. As you stand and marvel at the the sailboats along the boardwalk, simply turn around and you’ll see Will’s playground. The large playground is nestled in a block of trees and seems to be a world all it’s own. The trees shaded multiple play structures that allowed for not only fun for the kids, but fun for the adults to join the kids. That scores the most points with me on any child focused activity! It was obvious the park was designed for multiple ages and created an area for not only gross motor development, but development of problem solving, fine motor, etc skills. They had more than one activity that I have never seen on a playground before. Included in the You Tube video at the bottom of this post is a video of one of the new-to-us activities in action.
Once home, I discovered another reason to cherish the park our family enjoyed so much. The park was created in memory of a Put-In-Bay child, Will Blumensaddt, who died before his first birthday. From a mom who’s had a child die, I think this is an absolutely beautiful way to remember a child. I can’t think of anything more appropriate.

“The community members of Put In Bay, Ohio all came together in honor and support
to remember the loss of one of their loved ones in their community. Many fundraisers
were held and a beautiful playground was built in memory of Will Blumensaadt, a
toddler from Put-in-Bay who died from Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Will died from the
disease just short of his first birthday in June 2005.” – David Williams & Associates
We’ll be back, Lake Erie Shores & Islands!
