“The Midwest’s Largest and Best Drive-Thru Safari! Located in Port Clinton
Ohio, only 15 minutes from Cedar Point!”
-African Safari Wildlife Park
jkas
When was the last time your kids fed African Wildlife? For our family, it was last month and we didn’t even have to travel to Africa. In fact, we drove <5 hours from Cincinnati and stopped at the African Safari Wildlife Park in Port Clinton, OH.
There are so many unique experiences in the Lake Erie area. Cedar Point, Put In Bay and the African Safari Wildlife Park are just a few. On our family’s last visit to the area, we made a stop at the safari park and experienced not only seeing great African creatures up close, but feeding them! Both safaris, the camel ride, and playground made for a new opportunity and some excellent pictures.

Tip #4!
What animals are in the Drive-Thru Safari?
A list of some of the animals in the drive through safari can be found here. Different animals are grouped in different sections with the deer and camel being some of the first and giraffe and zebra last.
What animals are in the Walk-Thru Safari?
A list of some of the animals in the walk through safari can be found here. Since our visit, they’ve added even more including kangaroos and rabbits.
Are the animals behind fences/cages?
In the walk- through safari, all animals are behind fences or surrounded by water (with the exception of the camel who has a handler). In the drive through safari, some animals are behind fences, but most are not. Most are free to wonder and approach your vehicle if desired. The bigger animals though, as you can imagine, and animals out of rotation are behind fences.
What if the animals don’t approach our vehicle?
Trust me when I say you will have no problem getting an animal to approach your vehicle! These guys know the routine and know you have the good stuff. They will be pushing each other around to get to what you have for them. That being said, the park does rotate animals and some will be behind fences. Other animals (as you can see the bison below) just may not be interested at that time. So, yes. You will have more than enough interested creatures. However, you may not be approached by all.
Are there any rules?
As with any animal related experience, there are rules in place to keep both your family and the animals safe.
*Keep car doors closed at all times (Jeep and convertibles must have top and doors on to travel through the park. You can unzip or roll down your windows)
*Do not hang out of your car and stay in your car
*Feed only from cup provided and hold bottom of the cup while feeding (No feeding animals from your hands)
*Outside Food is not permitted.
*Only feed in feeding zones.
*Do not pet the animals.
Is there anything else to do besides the safaris?
In addition to the safaris, the park offers camel rides, a playground, educational shows, and other hands on experiences.
Are coupons/ discounts available?
There usually are coupons for different park experiences available. Be sure to check here for the most current.
Tip #1!
Hold on to your cup! As I said, they know you have the yummy stuff and some can get quite pushy. A few tears followed after these guys stole a cup, but after a bit, it made for a good laugh.
Tip #2!
Save the carrots for the end! The giraffes and zebras are last. being behind fences, they do much better with (and prefer) the carrots. When we got to the back area, the giraffes were on the other side of the yard. We put a carrot in a cup and banged it around. A few minutes later, a giraffe had followed the well known noise and was at our window.
Tip #3!
Open your sunroof! Yep, it’s allowed! This may not be too fun with most animals, but just wait until you get to the giraffes!
Tip #4!
Take your camera!! Not only will there be some great photo opps of your family, the animals love to pose!
