Secondary Drowning – Did You Know?
Summer brings with it lots of fun water activities and hopefully, a heightened awareness of drowning. Drowning is real and scary. It can happen at any age. It can happen in a matter of seconds. It can happen with a tsp of water. Yes, you read that correctly, a tsp of water!
In the bathtub, in the pool, anywhere there is water, drowning is a risk. As parents, we need to be adamant about watching our children in and around water. We all know never to leave a child in the bathtub, even for a second, without a responsible adult right there with them. We should be just as watchful near pools. I know it can be tempting to chat with friends, enjoy a book, check our email, etc while our kids are happily distracted by the pool fun. However, I remind you, it can happen in a matter of seconds. From a parent who had a child die in an unexpected occurrence (not drowning), take it from me and know that it can happen to anyone.
Not only is drowning real, but have you heard of secondary drowning? I hadn’t until I read this experience by parent and writer, Julie Giusti on You Beauty. Click on over and check out her article “Secondary Drowning: What Every Parent Needs To Know“. Read her experience, know the symptoms and share this reality. You may just save a child’s life. Thank you, Julie for sharing!
Be safe and have fun!
I had to live this for years. My 13 month old was with his grandparents and he fell in the columbia river. He was dead for over 20 minutes. A nightmare began. He was revived but had severe cerebral palsy all of his life of 18 years. We took care of him at home. This can happen so fast and sometimes you have no control over things. But always have a life jacket on when near water. I could write a book but I won’t. So important for little kids, they can be so fast.
It is sooo important to update people on this so thanks for sharing!!!
This is very important information every parent should be aware of. Thank you for sharing this.
I am a nurse so I know about secondary drowning. All parents need to be aware of dangers when water and children meet. It only takes a second. Please take the time to read!
Water safety is so important. I am ex Coast Guard so this is a subject that is really close to my heart.
Thanks for joining in at #throwbackthursday ! Very good topic for the summer season!
I have heard of secondary drowning, but I do not know a lot about it. Thank you for this post!
