Before bringing the little guy home, I got online and researched litter boxes. We haven’t had a cat in the house in over 7 years and I wanted to see if there was anything new. What I discovered is that litter boxes have come a long way in the past few years! Yes, the traditional boxes were still out there, but I also found mechanical and robot like litter boxes. At first, the thought of a mechanical litter box sounded crazy to me (not to mention they are more expensive than the traditional box style). However, as my research continued, I quickly discovered a futuristic-like litter box I thought may be the perfect answer for our family.
Our family is a typical busy family. In addition to other kitten care, daily cleaning of a litter box was not something we were looking forward to adding to our already long list of activities. A self cleaning litter box seemed to be an easy solution. After I was sold on a self cleaning litter box, I then had to decide which one. I dug into online reviews and came across the Litter-Robot. A litter box that “scooped” and emptied itself seemed too good to be true. Did it really work?
We contacted Litter-Robot and asked if they were confident enough in their product to allow us to put the Open Air III litter robot to the test. They were! Our Open Air III Litter-Robot arrived (Litter-Robot offers 3 styles. You can find the differences here) within a week and we quickly unboxed it out of curiosity and excitement.

The box is big. In fact, the whole unit is big. Before buying, make sure it will fit where you plan to keep it. Also make sure you can get it through the doorway after you fill it or fill it where it will be kept (see below 🙁 – oops!).

Right out of the box the unit was ready to go. Litter-Robot recommends using a lightweight, clay clumping litter, so that’s what we went with. However, when they say “fill line” in the globe, they mean the rubber lip around the middle of the black bottom and NOT the top of the rubber (again -oops!). Don’t overfill like I did the first time!

Our kitten was about 6 pounds when the unit arrived and the Open Air Litter-Robot cat sensor only recognizes cats weighing at least 5 lbs. Since he was right on the border, it took a couple of weeks before the cat sensor (which stops the robot from cycling if your cat enters the box while doing so) recognized him. Our curious little kitten kept trying to climb in and explore the unit in motion. We had to manually cycle until this point. Once the sensor recognized him though, it stopped whenever he tried to enter during cycling.
Our cat seems to go to the bathroom more than any cat I’ve ever known! It’s crazy! This being the case, our “Full Drawer” indicator flashes about once a week. When this happens, we replace the bag from underneath (I love that you can use any bags) and add a cup or two more litter to the globe. That’s it!

The sound of the motor may make some cats nervous. Our kitten was anything but scared. If yours is though, tips are included on how to help ease your cat. Other tips are also included on how to best switch your cat from it’s current litter box to the Litter-Robot.

The Litter-Robot has made life with our new kitten so much easier. Cleaning the litter box once a week and NEVER having to scoop is well worth it in my book! I highly recommend the Open Air III Litter-Robot – and with a 90 day Money-back guarantee, what do you have to lose?
